Why you should Monitor your salt intake

Americans love salt. It adds flavor to meals, keeps perishable foods and balances water and electrolyte levels in the body. Unfortunately, most people eat too much salt from processed foods. In so doing, they compromise their health in many ways.

Health professionals and food industry leaders are realizing the need to lower salt intake in America. On average, Americans consume about 3,300 milligrams of salt per day and about 75% of this consumption comes from processed foods. On the other hand, the Food and Drug Administration recommends a maximum of 2,300 milligrams of salt per day.


In reality, people should actually change their sodium intake with potassium. For potassium, adults should aim for a large sperm of 4,700 milligrams, eating foods rich in potassium such as bananas, spinach, lentils and tomatoes. Most Americans consume only 60 percent of the recommended potassium, resulting in electrolyte imbalance and additional stress on the blood vessels.

Recently, the FDA has created a voluntary movement for food businesses in order to lower the amount of salt in food. In this fast-paced world, people want proper food, but they should always have control over their sodium intake.
