Overdose deaths increase by 22 percent in NYC

Overdose deaths in the Big Apple have increased by 22% so far this year, policemen said on Monday.

The city has experienced 344 overdose deaths so far this year, up from 283 over the same period last year, officials said.

"Every overdose will have the same focus we will do on a homicide," said Robert Boyce, NYPD Chief Detective at a City Council hearing on public safety.

Cops has saved 271 people from overdoses to date this year, Boyce said.

"They saved a lot of people out there," he said.
